The Noise Around Investing: Understanding What Truly Matters
There are a lot of people out there making a lot of noise and waving their hands, trying to tell you what you should focus on as an investor.

These “hand-wavey” people talk about China, monetary policy, stimulus, asset allocation, and shiny objects like silver and gold. It’s an awful lot to keep track of.
And don’t get me wrong; some of those things actually do matter. It’s not a bad idea to learn about them.
But one thing is certain: when it comes to investing, nothing matters anywhere near as much as your behaviour.
The Impact of Behaviour on Investment Success
You can design the greatest portfolio ever created by humankind. However, one behavioural mistake a decade could mean you would’ve been better off in CDs at your bank or stuffing cash in your mattress.
So yes, the economy matters. Smart portfolio design matters. How much we have in small cap, value, and growth—all those things matter.
But the thing that matters most is having investments that will allow you to behave.
In fact, I would argue that even portfolio design only matters to the degree that it influences good behaviour.
Arguing over whether you should have 6.2% or 6.5% in emerging markets might be an interesting debate. However, the difference between 6.2 and 6.5 is a misdemeanor when the felony we’re all committing is behaving poorly.
Strategies for Better Investment Behaviour
Understanding Your Emotional Triggers
Recognising your emotional triggers is crucial. What makes you anxious about your investments? Is it market volatility? Or perhaps the fear of missing out on a trend? Understanding these triggers can help you manage your responses better.
Setting Clear Investment Goals
Having clear investment goals can guide your decisions. What are you investing for? Retirement, a home, or your children's education? When you know your goals, it’s easier to stay focused and avoid impulsive decisions.
Developing a Solid Investment Plan
A well-structured investment plan is essential. This plan should outline your investment strategy, risk tolerance, and time horizon. Stick to your plan, and don't let market noise sway you.
Regularly Reviewing Your Portfolio
Regular reviews of your portfolio can help you stay on track. Assess whether your investments align with your goals. Adjust as necessary, but avoid making hasty decisions based on short-term market movements.
Seeking Professional Guidance
Sometimes, it’s beneficial to seek help from a financial mentor. A trusted advisor can provide insights and help you navigate the complexities of investing. They can also support you in maintaining the right behaviour.
The Importance of Mindset in Investing
Investing is as much about mindset as it is about numbers. Your attitude towards risk and uncertainty can significantly influence your decisions.
Embracing a Long-Term Perspective
When you invest, it’s vital to adopt a long-term perspective. Markets can be volatile in the short term. However, history shows that patience often pays off.
Cultivating Resilience
Resilience is key in investing. You will face ups and downs. How you respond to these fluctuations can determine your success.
Staying Educated
Continuous learning is essential. The financial landscape is always changing. By staying informed, you can make better decisions and adapt to new challenges.
Conclusion: Focus on What Truly Matters
So, the next time a “hand-wavey” person shows up in your face, telling you all the things you should be doing, just smile, nod, and walk away.
And remember that none of it matters if you don’t know how to behave.
Investing is not just about numbers; it's about understanding yourself and your reactions. By focusing on your behaviour, you can make better decisions and achieve your financial goals.
Invest wisely, and remember: your behaviour is the key to your investment success.
