What DVA Entitlements Are Available to Australian Veterans?

The Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) administers a wide range of payments and support services for current and former ADF members and their families. Many eligible veterans either do not know what they are entitled to, or find the process of applying so complex that they delay or abandon claims. This is a significant and common financial loss.

Permanent Impairment (PI) Payments

If you have a service-related injury or illness that has resulted in permanent and stable impairment, you may be entitled to a Permanent Impairment payment. This can be taken as a lump sum or as a lifetime weekly payment. The choice between these options is one of the most consequential financial decisions a veteran makes, and it cannot be reversed. Factors including your age, other income, superannuation, life expectancy and broader financial goals all affect which option is better for you.

Special Rate Disability Pension (SRDP)

The SRDP is a tax-free payment for veterans whose service-related conditions have severely restricted their ability to work. It replaces incapacity payments for eligible veterans and is not income-tested against non-DVA income. Understanding how it interacts with your super and other financial arrangements is important.

Incapacity Payments

Incapacity payments are available for veterans who are unable to work, or whose capacity to work is reduced, due to a service-related condition. These are calculated based on your normal earnings and are paid fortnightly.

The $1,000 Transition Financial Advice Funding

ADF members approaching discharge are eligible for a $1,000 financial contribution toward professional financial advice. This is accessed through the ADF Transitions program. It is one of the most underutilised entitlements available to separating members.
